Woman Wins $20K Scratch-Off in Dundalk

 -Article courtesy of mdlottery.com-

Twice is nice according to a Baltimore County woman. The Dundalk resident revealed two $10,000 amounts on her $1,000 Loaded scratch-off, winning one of the game’s second-tier $20,000 prizes.

The lucky lady told Lottery officials that an earlier win on the $1,000 Loaded ticket had made the game a favorite. So, when she visited a local convenience store last weekend, the $10 scratch-off was an easy choice. She bought two and scratched them when she returned home.

After scratching her winning numbers on the top of the ticket, she slowly revealed a $10,000 prize.

“I saw the first two numbers and got excited for a $10 win, but the number just kept going,” said the winner. “When I revealed the full $10,000 prize, I thought I must not be seeing this right,” she said.

She rushed through the house to share the excitement of the win, waking her sleeping spouse.

While showing the $10,000 prize to her spouse, she scratched off the remainder of the ticket. Luck struck again while doing so, revealing another $10,000 prize on her ticket.

“I just about had a heart attack,” she said.

The rest of the evening was a sleepless night of excitement. The lucky winner said she plans to use some of the prize to pay down debt, get some new wardrobe for her kids and help her family.

The $1,000 Loaded instant ticket went on sale in May, featuring thousands of prizes from $10 to $20,000 and eight $100,000 top prizes. As of Sept. 29, there are three unclaimed $100,000 top prizes remaining, along with four more $20,000 prizes.

The winning ticket was sold at the Wise Avenue BP located at 7801 Wise Avenue in Dundalk.

Five Dundalk Schools Receive GREEN Grants

Five Dundalk schools were given grants as part of Team BCPS Clean Green 15 Litter Challenge.

There were 17 schools awarded grants across the county, but Charlesmont Elementary School in Dundalk led the way with a $3,000 grant.

Patapsco High School & Center for the Arts finished first in the BCPS high school division; General John Stricker Middle School placed first in the middle school division; Grange Elementary took the top spot in the elementary and Battle Monument School won the special school category.

All schools won $2,000 each in grants.

BCPS Superintendent Dr. Darryl L. Williams and Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski, visited Charlesmont Elementary School, Battle Monument School, and nearby General John Stricker Middle School.

After pausing a year for COVID, the Team BCPS Clean Green 15 Litter Challenge blossomed anew Tuesday, led by a bouquet of Baltimore County civic and educational leaders who brought thanks – and rewards – to students, schools, and community volunteers whose anti-litter efforts helped to beautify Baltimore County.

The annual competition, which this year awarded $22,000 in environmental literacy grants and technology prizes, challenges schools, students, and community partners to engage in quick, 15-minute local litter clean-up events.

“Clean Green 15 is a wonderful opportunity for Baltimore County students and their schools not only to help beautify their grounds and neighborhoods but also to learn the lessons of keeping the environment healthy,” said Dr. Williams. “Congratulations to our 17 winning schools for doing such a great job in keeping BCPS clean and green and also to all of those who participated in this important project both this year and last.”

Added County Executive Olszewski, “Over the past two years, Clean Green 15 volunteers removed tons of litter from our communities, and 17 of our Baltimore County schools earned thousands of dollars to pay for school-based environmental projects that will have a lasting impact on students for years to come.”

At each school stop on Tuesday, Debbie Phelps, executive director of The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools, led the applause for school staff, students, and supporters who completed the clean-ups.

Through this program – now in its ninth year – BCPS schools and their community supporters compete for doing the most clean-ups. The program is open to any groups, including school-based groups, places of worship, youth groups, civic or community groups, scout troops, sport teams, businesses or other organizations, that wish to help clean up their community. Groups are asked to report their clean-ups online and designate a school to receive credit toward the grant competition.

Team BCPS Clean Green 15 is a collaboration of the Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability, BCPS, and The Education Foundation of BCPS.

The Education Foundation awards grants to 11 top winning schools to fund school-based instructional projects that emphasize the theme of environmental literacy. Another six schools earned Honorable Mention awards and received funds to purchase STEM supplies and equipment. The list of winning schools is attached.

The celebration also marked the kickoff for the 2021-2022 Team BCPS Clean Green 15 Litter Challenge for this school year, with schools and groups eligible to log clean-up events taking place from May 1, 2021, through April 30, 2022, for consideration in next year’s awards.

Dundalk Clean up to be Held on Bear Creek

Clean Bread and Cheese Creek will host a fall clean up for the historic Bear Creek shoreline on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Registration will be located next to Battle Monument School, 7801 East Collingham Drive in Dundalk.

Registration tents and the event banners will be on display.

Registration will open at 8 a.m. , and the cleanup will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Any safety protocols in place by Maryland/Baltimore County will be enforced at the time of the event.

When volunteers arrive at registration they will immediately be giving supplies and sent to a designated area to begin cleaning up. Individually packaged snacks will be available.

”We run our cleanups as a family event with plenty of ways for volunteers to participate. We welcome every type of person of every ability level to contribute and assist with the cleanup,” said a statement from Clean Bread and Cheese Creek.

“Though it is true we will need people to dig out shopping carts and haul trash to the dumpsters, we need people to run water, food, tools, and trash bags (both empty and full) to individuals in the creek. People to sort recyclables from the debris removed.

“People will be needed to help at registration, setup food and snacks as well as many other less strenuous activities. We are also authorized to sign-off on Community Service and Service Learning Hours for students.

“The more people we have, the easier the work will be for everyone. We will provide lunch and snacks as well as gloves.

“A limited number of tools are available for sign-out, but suggest bringing your own if you have them.”

The historic shoreline of Bear Creek and Chalesmont Park  is where both the British and American set up defensive positions during the War of 1812, Battle of North Point.
