TradePoint Atlantic (TPA) held a press event on Tuesday to announce that they signed a deal with USWind to bring steel back to the Sparrows Point area.

Manufacturing is coming back to Sparrows Point and TPA said this deal will soon create 500 high quality, good paying, permanent union jobs for skilled workers once again.

Gov. Larry Hogan attended the event and said this announcement is both good for the environment and the economy.

“Expanding offshore wind in Maryland will diversify our economy and energy portfolio,” Hogan said.

“Through US Wind’s continued investment, the revitalization of Sparrows Point will be a shot in the arm for Baltimore, and another milestone for the transformative vision for Tradepoint Atlantic Industrial Complex.”

Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski, Jr. said that the addition of 500 union jobs could be a “game changer for the area.

“The legacy of Sparrows Point is built on good jobs for our families, and I’m excited about the prospect of the return of manufacturing to this site,” Olszewski said.

“This is a full circle moment that will strengthen communities across our entire region.”

Bad Storm Damage Reported in Edgemere Area

The North Point Edgemere Volunteer Fire Department [NPEVFD] reported that a strong storm on Monday, June 14 resulted in 18 service calls in the North Point Peninsula area.

Some of those calls included down trees, down powerlines and flooding.

One of those calls sent the Baltimore County Marine Unit to rescue two boaters who were stranded near the Fort Howard Lighthouse after their boat was overtaken by bad weather.

The boaters were rescued in what was described as “extremely rough sea conditions”.

It was reported that all crew members returned back safely.

“Last night the North Point Peninsula community experienced mother nature at her worst,” said a statement from the NPEVFD Facebook page.

Some in the area have questioned if this storm was a tornado. The National Weather Service has not yet confirmed if Monday’s storm was a tornado but the NPEVFD said the storm appeared to have a “rotation”

“The crew entered into the first storm cell, which was indicative of some rotation, while the events are still being investigated by the NWS, it is hard to deny rotation of this storm,” said a statement from NPEVFD.

HS Football Returns With Local School Wins

With the arrival of COVID-19, all high school sports were canceled last spring and that entered in the fall as football and all fall sports were canceled.

Teams around the area were very grateful to start an abbreviated fall season in the spring. The season started a week later after Week One was cancelled with COVID restrictions.

Teams finally took the field last night in front of limited fans. Here are some of the results for Eastern Baltimore County high schools:

Dundalk 39 Patapsco 6
The Owls went on the road to defeat their cross town rivals Patapsco 39 to 6. Click here for the full story

Eastern Tech 18 Sparrows Point 0
The Mavericks started off their season with a shutout win on the road. Eastern Tech is looking to bounce back from a 4-5 season. Sparrows Point is looking to improve from their 2-7 season in 2019.

Kenwood 38 Chesapeake 0
Since Kenwood was a playoff team in 2019 & Chesapeake was only a one-win team last year, this game wasn’t expected to be close. And it was a blowout as the Bluebirds started off 2020/21 with an easy 38-0 win at home.

Perry Hall 39 Catonsville 0
The shocker of the evening was Perry Hall’s 38-0 whipping of Catonsville. The Gators were expected to bounce back from their 0-9 season in 2019 but not many were predicting a blow out win at Catonsville, who made the playoffs in 2019.

County Announces Sparrows Point Park Project

County Executive Johnny Olszewski today announced major updates for a new Sparrows Point Park project, which will be co-located at Tradepoint Atlantic.

This project will be the first entirely new park built by Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks in six years and will fill a longstanding recreational gap in the Edgemere-Sparrows Point area.

“Our parks allow us to come together, enjoy the outdoors, and celebrate all our county has to offer and I’m thrilled that this new site will provide an engaging and supportive space for the Sparrows Point community—and beyond,” said Olszewski. “Growing up in the shadow of the steel mill, I’ve seen firsthand how Tradepoint Atlantic is transforming our local economy and I’m thankful for their continued partnership as we now work to provide this vibrant neighborhood hub that will connect our families and communities for generations to come.”

“We are pleased to partner with the County Executive and the Sparrows Point – Edgemere community to provide this much needed and promised parkland for public recreational use,” Said Aaron Tomarchio, Executive Vice President for Tradepoint Atlantic. “Integrating a public park into our re-development plan is simply the right thing to do, and something the community requested we consider since day one. We look forward to taking this next step to bring a Sparrows Point community park to reality.”

Shortly after taking office in December 2018, Olszewski worked with Tradepoint Atlantic to adjust a previously negotiated public infrastructure agreement to provide the County with a major parcel of environmentally clean, accessible land for a new public park.

County officials and Tradepoint Atlantic have now identified a potential 22-acre water-view site located at 1900 Wharf Road to serve as the location for this new park.

PROJECT DETAILS
The proposed park will be a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum designed project that includes:

16,000 square foot community center with double court gym, two community-accessible activity rooms and concessions area
Full-size synthetic turf field with LED lighting
10,000 square foot playground
ADA accessible fishing pier and kayak launch
Scenic walking path
“The opportunity to create a new waterfront park with amenities for citizens of all ages is rare and I am excited by the potential. We have advocated and discussed the possibility since the advent of Tradepoint Atlantic and they have always been open to the discussion,” said Councilman Todd K. Crandell. “Thanks to the work and negotiation between the community, the Administration, TPA and the County Council, a once in a generation opportunity to create an amazing new park and community center is coming to fruition.”

“A new facility located at Tradepoint Atlantic would be an invaluable asset to the southeast area communities we have served for over 70 years,” said Tim Dodge, President of the Edgemere-Sparrows Point Recreation Council. “We’re excited for a state-of-the art site that will alleviate existing logistical challenges and expand capacity for our many programs, while paying homage to the proud history of the Sparrows Point area.”
