Patapsco High School 2021 Football Preview

Patapsco 2019 Record: 3-6

Head Coach Tyler Clough

“The Patapsco Patriots team for the 2021 season is the best team that I have had in my 6 years as head coach at Patapsco. For the first time every player that is on my offensive line is the actual size of a lineman. We also field a team with multiple versatile players, guys that can play anywhere on the field. The best part about my team this year is that they all just want to play football.

“After not playing in 2020 and just a mini season in the spring of 2021 my entire roster is ready to play and they don’t care what position that is. Every guy on my team is willing to play any position and do what’s best for the team. We have huge goals this fall, first we want to go over .500 and have a winning record. Every year I’ve been the coach we’ve won at least one more game than the year before, it’s time to take the next step and have a winning record. Our next goal is to make the playoffs.

“If we go over .500 and win 5-6 games, it should put us in a spot where we have the chance to make the 3A north playoffs for only the second time in school history. Overall, we have a competitive varsity team and are excited for the season.”

Key Players

Elijah Bass, RB/Safety Junior
Elijah is a starting running back and safety, he will lead our team and we will look for him to be a full time running back and carry the load for us on offense.

Willie Beard, OL/DL Senior
Willie is a starting left tackle and D-tackle, he is an all-division player and the anchor for our offensive line.

Kevin Batchelor, OL/DE Junior
Kevin is a two-way starter and an extremely athletic offensive and defensive lineman. Kevin has a high motor and always plays hard.

Gavin Tezzano WR/LB Senior
Gavin had a strong season for us in the covid league and we look for him to carry his momentum into the fall. A two way starter we will look for Gavin to lead us at middle line backer.

Eric Olsen FB/LB Junior
Eric was a two way starter during the spring league and will be a leader on offense and defense this season.

Khalil Coates QB Freshman
Khalil is our starting QB as a freshman, what he lacks in experience he makes up for in size as he stands 6’2 220lbs. We will look to develop Khalil over the next few seasons.

Kenwood High School 2021 Football Preview

Kenwood 2019 Record: 4-6 (3A playoffs first round)

Head Coach Derrick Krumholtz

“We are very talented at the skill positions and we return the entire starting Offensive Line from the Spring Mini-Season. We lost 4 key Seniors from the Spring team, but we did add two talented players that were not eligible in the spring. We are excited to see what this group can do against a very tough schedule of competition,” Krumholtz said about the season.

“We are a 3A team playing a predominantly 2A schedule so we will have less opportunities for playoff points compared to the other 3A teams in the county. It’s unfair and unfortunate, but all we can do is try to win the games we have on our schedule and see where we end up.”

Sports Editor No Longer With Dundalk Eagle

For the first time since 2000, a local legend will no longer be on the sidelines at the three Dundalk area high schools for a sporting event.

No, this is not a coach, booster or parent. It is a member of the local media. Sports editor Bill Gates is no longer with the Dundalk Eagle after 21 years.

He has had health issues and was unable to return to work before his medical leave expired. He now lives in Florida with family because it’s not safe for him to live alone due to his health problems.

As many of you know, I was a colleague of Bill when I worked at the Dundalk Eagle. I knew Bill was one of the top sports reporters in the state as I saw all the awards that he accumulated over the years before my arrival.

The one thing that I didn’t know about Bill was his dedication. He covered as many of the Dundalk, Sparrows Point and Patapsco high school sporting events as possible. If any of the two local schools were playing each other in any sport, Bill was going to cover those teams.

It didn’t matter if it was a glamour sport such as football, baseball, softball or soccer or if it was tennis, field hockey, wrestling, cross country or track and field (I can’t remember if he covered Badminton, but I am sure he did).

And that meant there were a lot of bad teams and games that he had to cover but he would be at a lacrosse game when a 1-8 Dundalk would play a 2-6 Patapsco. He never wanted to miss a Dundalk, Patapsco or Sparrows Point game.

I remember on Memorial Day weekend in either 2013 or 2014, Bill has a busy schedule. He had a track and field meet on Friday where many local students had a chance at first place finishes at Morgan State.

The next day, Sparrows Point was playing for the state titles in baseball and softball. One game was in Aberdeen and the other game was at College Park.

Of course Bill traveled to both locations which was a feat in itself, but he was upset that he couldn’t go back to the track and field event at Morgan that day.

I asked him why does he care about one event since he was there on Friday. He responded there was one student that had a chance to finish first in pole vaulting and he would feel terrible if she wins first place but did not receive any media coverage.

That’s what makes Bill such a great reporter. He loves giving the athletes recognition for their hard work.

He spoiled the Dundalk, Patapsco and Sparrows Point schools as many schools in this state only receive coverage if they win a state title.

I am sure Bill was bored during the pandemic from March 2020 until the start of the proposed sports season, which was scheduled to begin in 2021.

He was looking forward to the fall season finally starting March, but he never made it back to cover a game last year.

This weekend the football season kicks off in Baltimore County, but the sidelines in Dundalk will not be the same.

BCPS Announces COVID Guidelines for Sports

The start of the high school sports season is a week away from this Friday and BCPS sent out it guidelines for athletes, coaches, and spectators at its athletic events.

As expected, face coverings are mandated for athletes when inside a school building unless the athlete is in the field of play. All coaches, sideline players and spectators must wear a face covering while indoors. That applies to all vaccine and unvaccinated individuals.

However; BCPS is not requiring masks for outdoor events, although it is recommended that non-unvaccinated individuals wear a mask outdoors.

Spectators are still required to practice social distancing and BCPS is prohibiting congregating at the field, in the school, or in the stadium following the game. Parents are required to meet their student back at the school.

Of course, teams will still be allowed to travel to other schools, but new guidelines are in place as visiting teams will follow BCPS mitigation measures.

Visiting teams will be allowed enough time for warmup prior to the game start time.

Visiting teams must arrived dressed and ready to take the floor/field as access to locker rooms for visiting teams will not be permitted and JV/Varsity team not playing will be required in the bleachers following social distancing guidelines.

BCPS Sports to Make Full Return in 2021-22

The fall sports season begins Aug. 11 in Baltimore County Public Schools, and BCPS is asking all students to register now for autumn athletics participation.

The fall season was a shorten season played in the spring after COVID numbers were too high last fall.

“I encourage all students to consider participating in interscholastic athletics,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Darryl L. Williams. “Competing in sports is a great way to make friends, stay physically and mentally healthy, and strengthen discipline.”

“We are extremely excited about the return of our traditional fall athletic season on August 11,” said Michael Sye, BCPS coordinator of athletics. “Our athletic directors, and coaches are looking forward to our student athletes returning and taking part in our interscholastic program.”

The BCPS high school fall athletics season will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 11, but online registration is open now for allied soccer, badminton, cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, soccer, and volleyball.

The middle school fall athletics season will begin on Monday, Sept. 13. Online registration information for badminton and cross country is available now.

For all BCPS athletics, students must meet eligibility requirements and have a valid pre-participation physical. Questions should be directed to school athletic directors.

Athletics will continue to follow the BCPS mitigation plan in the 2021-22 school year. At this time, all athletes are eligible and strongly encouraged to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Find an updated list of providers and pre-register for an appointment near you at COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics in Maryland. We continue to work with our health partners to examine practices to keep all students safe.

Three CCBC Essex Players Named All-Americans

When a team is one win away from the national title, there is a good chance that team is going to have some all-Americans.

That is the case at CCBC Essex as three men’s soccer players from the team have been named NJCAA All-Americans.

Kota Tsuchisawa was named first team; Brendan LeMaster was named second team and Ethan Stewart was named third team.

CCBC Essex made it to their first NJCAA title game in 30 years before falling to Southeastern in overtime.
