Maryland State Fair Officially Canceled

The cancelations for 2020 continue and this time COVID-19 claims a major event, the Maryland State Fair. The Fair was scheduled to take place at the Timonium Fairgrounds from Aug. 28 to Sept. 7. Representatives from the Fair announced that the 2020 version was canceled on Wednesday.

“Today, it is with heavy hearts that the Board of Directors, management and staff of the Maryland State Fair & Agricultural Society, Inc. announce the decision to cancel the 139th Maryland State Fair,” said Maryland State Fair Board Chairman Gerry L. Brewster said in a statement.

“Fortunately, we have received approval to allow youth and open class exhibitors from Maryland to show their animals in livestock shows following all proper protocols. Although this will not be open to the public, this will allow Maryland’s youth to showcase their hard work and will also allow the Maryland State Fair to fulfill its mission to educate and to showcase Maryland Agriculture.”

This is the second time in its 142-year history that The Maryland State Fair was cancelled. The other time was during World War II when the state fair property was used by the U.S. Army.

High School Fall & Winter Sports Season Canceled

It is official that the high school sports fall and winter seasons have been canceled as a result of COVID-19. The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) released an official statement today.

“The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) in consultation with the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, the Maryland Department of Health (MDH), and the Public School Superintendent Association of Maryland PSSAM) has decided to postpone the 2020 high school fall and winter competition season during the first semester,” said a statement on the MPSSAA website.

“This decision comes in light of the recent announcements of local school systems to begin education virtually and provides each school system with options for the gradual increase of student engagement for the physical and social-emotional health of students.”

There was hope and a plan for Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) to have a fall sports season but that plan came to an end when BCPS said they were canceling their fall sports season after their school system went back to remote learning.

Man Charged With Using Laser at Helicopter

Baltimore County Police want to remind the public that it is illegal to shine a laser pointer at any aircraft and an arrest was made for that type of incident on July 26 just after 12:30 a.m.

Police reported a suspect stood in front of the 1700 block of Earhart Road in Essex and shined a laser pointer through the cockpit of Baltimore County Police Department’s helicopter.

At the time, officers from the Baltimore County Police Department’s Aviation Unit flew the helicopter over Eastern Boulevard and Orville Road, assisting officers with an unrelated investigation. Officers flying the helicopter located the suspect and he was quickly arrested by patrol officers.

Brandon Dunevant (31) of the 1700 block of Earhart Road of Essex was arrested and charged with pointing a laser pointer at an aircraft. He is currently held at the Baltimore County Detention Center on a no bail status.

The Baltimore County Police Department said they take these acts very seriously. Pointing a laser pointer at an aircraft is extremely hazardous to the flight crew and to people on the ground.

It should be noted that pointing a laser pointer at an aircraft is a misdemeanor that carries a $2,500 fine or up to three years jail time.
