Shady Spring ES Assistant Named Professional of the Year

As an administrative assistant in the front office of Shady Spring Elementary School in Rosedale, Steven “Brad” Fisher prides himself on knowing just about everything happening at his school.

On Tuesday morning, however, he had no idea that Baltimore County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Darryl L. Williams would be stopping by with other education leaders to announce that he (Fisher) is the 2021 BCPS Office Professional of the Year.

“As a former principal, I know the positive difference outstanding office professionals can make in a school,” said Williams. “Congratulations to Brad Fisher on his well-deserved honor. In highlighting his excellence, we hope to bring attention to office professionals throughout the school system.”

Fisher joined BCPS in 2012 as an office professional at Elmwood Elementary School. He moved into his current role at Shady Spring Elementary in 2018.

“Since Brad arrived, he has worn many hats at Shady Spring,” said Principal Sandra Jimenez, “like best-dressed, first smile to see in the building, and prime organizer, but some unusual roles as well, such as first responder to student and teacher needs, Black History Month schoolwide event organizer, and this year, schoolwide mailman! Brad is dedicated to all the staff and students in the building and shows his care and support daily. Brad even sponsors his own Teacher Appreciation Day for the staff.”

Jimenez also notes that Fisher frequents classrooms and makes it a point to connect with some of the school’s students. “The younger students love to see his face because they know that he will most likely be reading a special story to them,” Jimenez said. “Brad helps many staff members with his problem-solving approach. Brad is loved and appreciated by staff, students, and parents. He also supports the ESPBC [Education Support Professionals of Baltimore County] organization and regularly presents at the annual conference. The school runs more smoothly because of him.”

In addition to Supt. Williams and Principal Jimenez, others participating in the surprise announcement were Dr. George Roberts, community superintendent, East Zone; Mildred Charley-Greene, acting chief of staff; Jane Lichter, executive director – elementary and secondary, East Zone; Jeannette Young, president, ESPBC; Joe Coughlin, vice president, ESPBC; Dianna Woodlon, chair, ESPBC Recognition and Retirement Committee; and Seleste Harris, director, UniServ.

Nottingham Driver Arrested in I-95 Police Crash

Maryland State Police arrested and charged a suspected impaired driver who hit a state police vehicle and fled the scene on May 5 on I-95 in Baltimore County.

The accused is identified as Gasper Botteon, 45 of Nottingham. Botteon is charged with driving under the influence, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and other traffic charges related to the hit and run.

Botteon was driving a white box truck and was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was uninjured in the incident.

Shortly after 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, a Maryland State Trooper from the JFK Memorial Highway Barrack in his marked patrol vehicle at the 64.4-mile marker on I-95, was conducting a crash investigation. While he was working inside of his vehicle, a white box truck struck the driver’s side of his vehicle and ripped off the door. The box truck continued traveling northbound on I-95 in Rosedale. The trooper was not injured.

A lookout for the box truck was immediately broadcast to all law enforcement in the area. Troopers from the Bel Air Barrack located the vehicle and the driver shortly after 6:15 p.m. northbound on Route 24 at Bel Air S. Parkway in Belair.

The driver, later identified as Botteon, showed signs of suspected impairment. He was subsequently arrested on scene without incident and transported to the JFK Memorial Highway Barrack for processing.

The investigation is continuing.

Marks Gives Update on New Northeast Elementary School

Elementary School to Built at Gum Spring Road and Rossville Boulevard

-by Councilman David Marks R-5-

[Baltimore County Board of Education Vice Chair] Julie Henn and I are happy to share the news that construction will start this month on the first of two new schools in northeastern Baltimore County.

The school is located in Councilwoman Cathy Bevins’ district, but it will serve neighborhoods in both the Fifth and Sixth Districts. Councilwoman Bevins has partnered with me for several years on this project, and I thank her for her strong support, as well as County Executive [John] Olszewski and our partners in the state legislature.

The 102,000-square foot school will serve 750 students from an area to be determined after a redistricting process. Funding is in place for a new middle school expected to open in 2024, and land is now identified for a new high school. Overcrowding is worse at the elementary school level as magnet programs and private schools have tended to absorb many older students.

Youtube Channel Profiles Golden Ring Mall

There is a YouTube channel that profiles the history of local malls in the region.

One of the malls featured is the former Golden Ring Mall in the Rossville area.

The mall opened in the 70s and closed in 2001. The mall’s old location has been the current home of The Centre at Golden Ring shopping center since its opening in 2002.

The video details the popularity of Golden Ring in the 1980s and early 90s as it housed the only movie theater in the area.

Then it is explained that the opening of Towsontown Mall in 1992 and the opening of the movie theater at The Avenue White Marsh in 1997 as a reason for the decline of Golden Ring.

I agreed with that assessment but felt that the creation of Campbell Boulevard also hurt Golden Ring.

The only way to get from Golden Ring to White Marsh Mall in the early 90s was to drive on the fast paced I-95. Once Campbell was built, motorists could drive safely from Golden Ring on Philadelphia Road to Campbell to White Marsh Mall.

The video was a nice trip down memory lane. I was hoping the author would have posted some old videos from inside the mall and had more original photos.

Some of the photos included the ironic Montgomery Wards photo and an outdoor picture of the old Stewarts from the highway.

I have seen many of these photos on social media, but it is probably difficult to find original photos of the old mall.

It is worth a view.
