Perry Hall Girls Soccer in State Semifinals After 4-1 Win

Perry Hall Girls Soccer is now two wins away from back-to-back state titles as the Gators defeated Prince George’s County Eleanor Roosevelt High School on the road 4-1 to advance to the 4A State Semifinals.

According to the team’s Facebook page, the Lady Gators went up 2-1 on Roosevelt at halftime after they received goals from Kam Williams & Analyn Weyan.

Roosevelt was able to hang around in the second half, but a goal by Kyleigh Gough with four minutes left iced the game for the Gators. Erin Marciszewski added another goal to get the score to 4-1.

The Gators found themselves on the road in Greenbelt because they were seeded 7th and Roosevelt was ranked 2, but Perry Hall proved that they were underseeded.

Perry Hall will now play Montgomery Blair at Gaithersburg High School on Saturday, Nov. 9

CCBC Essex Mens Soccer Upend Harford to Reach Region XX Championship Game

– by Patrick Coonan of CCBC Esses –

It took Daigo Adachi and the Knights just 16 minutes to tally their first goal yesterday against Harford in an NJCAA Region XX Division I Tournament semifinal match in route to a 7-1 victory

The Knights (15-3) move on in search of an eighth straight regional title and play its sibling campus CCBC Catonsville in the championship on Saturday at host Harford Community College. Kickoff is currently scheduled for 3 p.m.

Adachi’s opening goal was assisted by Seth Onolaja who dropped a pass back to the Miyagi, Japan native. Adachi drove it low into the corner for the early 1-0 lead.

In the 25th minute, Sam Adunah slipped through the Harford defense and beat the goalie with a near post shot on the break.

CCBC Essex’s next goal came a minute later when Adunah fed Andy Portillo the ball and he finished for his second goal of the season.

The Knights controlled the pace of play for the next 15 minutes, keeping the Fighting Owls (8-11) on their heels.

Onolaja would capture his second assist of the day in the 41st minute, when he played the ball across to Marvin Martinez who converted.

With five seconds remaining in the first half, Harford would found light.

Wyatt Moran played a corner that Robel Bistrat headed home to cut the deficit to three at 4-1 heading into halftime.

The Knights came out hot in the second half.

Adachi tallied his second goal of the game with a header off a corner kick by Martinez.

With eight minutes left in regulation, Rezon Ahmeti scored off a free kick to make it 6-1.

In the 86th minute, Axa Hernandez (Bladensburg) capped the scoring with his first collegiate goal, assited by Ferdis Melgar.

“We started slow as we usually do,” head coach Joe Fiedler said. “But then we came through and played pretty well throughout the remainder of the game.”

The seven-time defending Region XX Division I champion Knights will play CCBC Catonsville on Saturday. The last meeting between the two teams – October 1 – ended with CCBC Essex winning a 2-0.

The winner of the Region XX Division I Championship advances to the NJCAA East District semifinals. District champions earn an automatic bid to the NJCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament in Tyler, Texas.

Women’s Cross Country: CCBC Essex Earns 1st Regional Title Since 2012

-by Rocco Geppi –

On Saturday, Oct. 27, the Knights women’s cross country team earned its first NJCAA Region XX Division I Championship since 2012 at the Region XX/Maryland Juco Athletic Conference Championship meet hosted by Hagerstown Community College. Essex finished runners up for the conference title, missing by just four points.

“This is a major accomplishment considering three different student athletes were dealing with various injuries within a week of the meet,” said head cross country coach Noah Hutton. “The ladies raced hard against Anne Arundel Community College just barely losing out on the conference championship.”

This season was a unique combination of extreme talent, potential and student athletes new to the sport.

Gabrielle Turner and Karson Marcellino (Eastern Tech grad) led the way at the regional/conference meet and laid the foundation for a potential nationally competitive women’s team next year.

Turner ran with the top three women all race and out kicked the No. 3 finisher in the last 100m to finish as Region XX and Maryland Juco runner up. Marcellino peaked at the right point in the season and finished the meet in fourth place.

Both earned All-Region XX and All-Maryland Juco honors.

Over the course of the year, Turner led the Knights at every meet and broke the school record for the 5k at the Bud Smitley Invitational at PSU Harrisburg (Oct. 5).

“She races with guts and is always within the top 10-20 miles for the first mile,” Hutton said.

Marcellino was the second place finisher every meet for the Knights and technically ran her fastest 5k at the championship meet, but ran her first 5k of the 6k at Hood invitational (Oct. 19) faster, with a time of 22:09.0.

Both ladies are now top 10 in school history for the 5k and top five in school history for the 6k.

Turner and Marcellino will look to run personal bests at the NJCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on November 9.

Amber Pearce ran extremely well at regionals considering she recently rolled an ankle. Genevieve LaFon also pushed through an injury that has been lingering since the beginning of the year and ran the only personal best on the women’s side.

Eastern Tech grad Marisa Hernandez and Alisa Lawton also raced hard for the Knights.

Parkville, Tech & Kenwood Win But Chesapeake & Perry Hall lose again in Football

Eastern Tech 28 Lansdowne 14
Eastern Tech put together its first winning streak and got over .500 this year after a win at Lansdowne on Friday night. It was a must win as Eastern Tech will play at Hereford, who has won four straight games and they finish at home against 7-1 New Town.

Owings Mills 60 Chesapeake 0
The Bayhawks were shut out for the third straight week and have lost four games in a row after they were defeated at Owings Mills on Friday. Chesapeake has been outscored 171-8 during the four-game losing streak. There is hope for the 1-6 Bayhawks as they play at winless Sparrows Point this week and at winless Western Tech during the last two weeks of the season.

Hereford 28 Overlea 24
Overlea lost to a hot Hereford team on Friday night to fall to 4-3 on the year. Hereford started off 0-3 but they have now won four straight. The Falcons appear to be in good shape to make the playoffs as they were ranked third out of 12 teams in their region before the loss. The top eight make the playoffs. Although the last two games will be tough for Overlea as they travel to New Town this week and end their regular season at home against first place Milford Mill.

Kenwood 20 Woodlawn 12
Kenwood got a much needed win on the road at Woodlawn to improve to 4-3 on the year. Woodlawn was ranked third in the 3A North Region and the Bluebirds were sixth before the game. Kenwood needs to stay in the top 8 to make the playoffs and they finish the season at Towson this weekend and end their season at home against undefeated Parkville.

Parkville 28 Randallstown 6
Parkville remained unbeaten with an impressive road win at Randallstown. The Knights are a perfect 7-0 and are in first place in the 4A North standings. They will play winless Western Tech this week and will likely go into their last game undefeated at Kenwood, looking for the perfect regular season.

Franklin 63 Perry Hall 0
The Gators were no match for defending state champion Franklin and fell to 0-7. Perry Hall hosts Randallstown on Friday night. Perry Hall is a larger 4A school and Randallstown is a smaller 1A school so there is an outside chance that the Gators might get their first win of the season. However; Randallstown is a solid team at 4-3 and it won’t be easy for the Gators.

Perry Hall Grads Help CCBC Essex Women Beat Frederick

-by Patrick Coonan of CCBC-

On Tuesday, it was a crisp autumn evening in Baltimore, but the Knights remained hot as they dispatched Frederick 3-1 to end the regular season on a 16-game winning streak and win their first Maryland Juco Athletic Conference Championship in more than seven seasons.

The win also gives the Knights the No. 1 seed and a first round bye in the NJCAA Region XX Division I Tournament, which begins for Essex in the semifinals round on October 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the tournament is being hosted by Harford Community College.

CCBC Essex (16-1, 7-0 Maryland Juco) began the game pressing hard, but the Frederick defense was up to the challenge, limiting the Knights to just one shot in the first 12 minutes of play.

In the 13th minute of play, however, freshman and Sparrows Point grad Dani Zacierka began a run before being pulled down in the box that would lead to a penalty kick. Fellow freshman and Perry Hall grad Kara Dietrich converted the kick for her NJCAA Division I leading 43rd goal of the season, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.

It was also the 100th goal scored this season for Essex.

The rest of the half would go on to be played primarily in the middle of the field with the Knights holding a 1-0 edge at the break.
Frederick (10-3-1, 4-2-1 Maryland Juco) would strike 10 minutes into the second half when Lindsey Brant scored her 43rd goal on the year to tie Dietrich for the national lead. It took the Knights 10 minutes to respond in kind.

Ryleigh Fachler, also a graduate of Perry Hall, would put in a head ball past the Cougars’ keeper off a ball from Dietrich to make it 2-1 in the 67th minute of play.

“It was really exciting,” Fachler said. “And the fact that we pulled it out was great.”
In the 78th minute, Fachler would net the dagger when she would put another head ball past in off a beautiful cross from Taylor West to make the score 3-1. Is was Fachler’s ninth of the year.

“I am usually one of the shortest players on the field,” said Fachler, who stands at 5-foot-1. “So I have a saying that I use, ‘Heart over height,’ to motivate me to win head balls. It was so exciting to score on two headers in game like this.”Emily Vetra, a Sparrows Point grad, did not tally a goal or an assist, but her play, especially at the midfield, was one of the biggest reason the Knights were able to control the ball so much.

Sam Tornatore of Eastern Tech, made her 17th consecutive start in goal and finished with three saves. She now has 37 saves this year with a 1.47 goals against average.
