CCBC Essex Mens Soccer Pulls Off Amazing Comeback Win vs. Frederick

– by Patrick Coonan of CCBC –

Trailing 2-0 with 9:15 left in regulation and down a man, the Knights scored three goals on Tuesday to defeat the visiting Frederick Cougars 3-2 in front of a home crowd at CCBC Essex.

The victory secured at least a tie for the Maryland Juco Conference title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NJCAA Region XX Divsion I Tournament, which begins on October 30 in the semifinals round for Essex. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at host Harford Community College. The Knights are the seven-time defending Region XX Division I champions.

In the 20th minute, Vagner Marques-Rodriguez would break through to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
CCBC Essex (14-3, 10-1 Maryland Juco) began playing a man down in the 38th minute after sophomore Javier Avetrani received a red card.

The Knights had chances in the first half, but only managed to put two shots on goal and trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Essex came out strong in the second, but Marques-Rodriguez beat freshman keeper Jack Roby one-on-one in the 75th minute to give Frederick (11-3, 10-2 Maryland Juco) a 2-0 edge.

In the 81st minute, sophomore Wilfred Tinay played a ball into freshman Marvin Martinez who slipped it past the Frederick keeper to pull the Knights within one.
Essex would strike again less than three minutes later when freshman Rin Yasui (Seiwa Gakuen) scored off a great pass from freshman

Sam Adunah (Gar-Field Senior) to tie the game with six minutes left.

With overtime in sight, the Knights had other plans as Yasui got off a corner with 15 seconds on the clock.
Perry Hall grad Acolmi Rios found the loose ball and put it into the corner, tallying the game-winner for the Essex with 10 seconds remaining.

“It feels good to beat Frederick like that,” Rios said. “It shows that all the hardwork we’ve been putting in this season is coming together at the right time of the year.”

Roby finished the game with one save on three shots on goal. That stop came in the 69th minute.

Tinay played arguably the best game of his two-year career at Essex. Playing as a true middie, he was constantly breaking up the Cougars’ movements on defense and advancing the ball the the Knights’ attack.

Overlea High Gets New Turf Field

Overlea High School received a nice gift this year as Baltimore County presented the school a new turf field. Many football fields are subjected to wear and tear over the years, so many schools have started to install modern turf fields. Perry Hall High School received a new field last year and Overlea High received their turf field this year for their football program.

The official ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Friday night before the Overlea football team played against St. Johns Catholic Prep and County Executive Johnny Olszewski, Jr. was at Overlea for the new field.

“Honored to join the Overlea community tonight to celebrate the new turf field here at Overlea High School. Congratulations, and good luck to our student athletes,” Olszewski said on social media.

Councilwoman Cathy Bevins, who represents the Overlea area, also attended the ribbon cutting.

“Today was a beautiful day for a ribbon cutting ceremony at Overlea High School to celebrate the school’s new turf field. This was a $800,000 project that took much time and dedication,” Bevins said.
“It is awesome having such great partnerships with the school, the County Executive, and the community.”

CCBC Essex Men Ranked No. 25 in Cross Country

-by Rocco Geppi –

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Oct. 2 released its latest polls and CCBC Essex is ranked as the 25th best NJCAA Division I men’s program.

“The team has been working very hard,” said head coach Noah Hutton, who is a resident of Essex. “This year’s team has minimal cross country experience. The effort they have put in to compete at a high level is starting to show in their results.”
The Knights are the only cross country team in the Maryland Juco Conference and NJCAA Region XX to appear in the poll.

CCBC Essex’s women’s team is also making strides and showing signs of improvement since summer practices.
On Aug. 30, the Knights began the season at Dickinson College’s “Light up the Night” Invitational.

Gabrielle Turner beat her fastest 5k time from high school by almost 90 seconds at Dickinson. Her time was a top ten time in CCBC Essex women’s cross country over the past 10 years and is within 70 seconds of the fastest time within the last ten years.
The women’s team scored in their first meet as a team in over 14 months.
On the men’s side at Dickinson, Liam Mischke led the Knights in a close and tight race with Carroll Community College and Hagerstown Community College.

Sophomore Bradley Allen, a grad of Dundalk High School, came into the cross country season in much better shape than last season and it showed in his second place finish on the team. His leadership is helping the many new runners to the sport of cross country, including fellow Dundalk grad James Rudolph, a promising freshman student-athlete who finished third on the team and has a bright future at CCBC Essex.

Charles Whiting and Eastern Tech graduate Anibal Avila rounded out the top 5.

“There are many tight packs forming on the men’s team,” Hutton said after the race. “This will help the team improve and succeed over the next couple of months leading up to the conference and Region XX championships.”

At the Green Terror Challenge (McDaniel College) on Sept. 6, both squads had strong showings, with many finishing in the top 12.
The men finished second as a team in the 3k.

On Sept. 21 at the Eastern Shore XC Invitational (UMES), the men came in 5th place out of six teams and finished with seven runners in front of the third and fourth teams and number five runner. The Knights also beat the only two-year college present.

Cross Country next races on Saturday, as half the men and the women travel to Penn State Harrisburg for the Bud Smitley Invitational. The other half of the men’s squad will head to Salisbury University for the Don Cathcart Invitational.

The Knights (12-1) are now ranked 19th in the nation, their first time in the NJCAA Top 20 since 1989.

Essex trailed early against Monroe when Gaia Iacuzzi scored a ball crossed to the six-yard line by Kimberly McPhearson for 1-0 Tribunes lead. It wouldn’t take long for the Knights and Kara Dietrich (Perry Hall) to answer when she rolled the ball past the goalkeeper in the sixth minute of play.

In the 25th minute, Kimberly McPhearson hit a rocket off the crossbar that Knights’ goalie Sam Tornatore (Eastern Tech grad) would gather safely. In the 15th minute Joey Eskey hit the crossbar from a head ball off an Emily Vetri (Sparrows Point grad) corner. In a competitive first half, the score at the break was tied at one. For the much of the beginning of second half, the Knights were under siege.

They would eventually gain their footing and in the 73rd minute Natalie Marx had the breakthrough for Essex. The dagger came in the 87th minute when Vetri hit a shot that would go over the goalie’s reach and into the upper corner to put Essex ahead 3-1. Tornatore finished the game with three saves on four Tribunes’ shots on goal.

On Sunday, Dietrich beat their keeper near post for a 1-0 Essex lead in the 16th minute. It was Dietrich’s 31st goal of the season. Dietrich would assist on the next goal, as she played Mikayla Boyle (Eastern Tech grad ) for the 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

Eastern Tech Defense Stops Overlea 28-27

Eastern Tech’s defense was able to hold off Overlea and their Quarterback David Streater on a fourth down play in the final 30 seconds to seal a 28-27 win at home at CCBC Essex on Homecoming. Streater broke off a 70-yard touchdown run in the final two minutes and it appeared to give Overlea the go-ahead touchdown, but it was called back on a holding penalty.

Overlea Quarterback David Streater threw for over 150 yards and two touchdowns.
The Mavericks’ special teams also made three big plays to help set up three touchdowns. It appeared that Overlea was going to dominate the game early as Streater hit Falcon Wide Receiver Jairus Cannon on a 63-yard touchdown pass to start the game. Then Overlea forced the Mavericks to punt on their opening drive, but the Falcons miffed the punt return and Eastern Tech recovered the ball on the Overlea 33. A 23-yard run by Marty Lawrence help set up a Jerryn Preisinger 1-yard touchdown run.

Special teams continued to haunt Overlea as Eastern Tech’s Noah Oliver returned a punt to the Falcon 1-yard line to set up Maverick Quarterback Jordan Knight’s 1-yard touchdown run.

After the Overlea defense scored a touchdown on Cornerback Troy Smith’s 30-yard fumble recovery, the Falcon defense again forced the Maverick offense to go three and out. However; Eastern Tech rolled the dice and called for a fake punt on their 38-yard line and the team picked up the first down. That later resulted in a Lawrence 18-yard touchdown run.

Overlea’s offense scored fast. In addition to the opening touchdown pass from Streater, the Falcons scored their second touchdown on three plays. Streater hit Cannon on another big play of 45 yards and Running Back Deon Whye finished off the drive with a 25-yard touchdown run. Whye had over 70 yards rushing on the night.

Overlea’s Kweli Battle catches a touchdown before the half.
Because of their quick strike offense, special teams’ mistakes and their defensive touchdown, Overlea only ran seven plays of offense compared to Eastern Tech’s 29 plays before Overlea’s final drive in the first half. On the last drive of the half, Overlea put together a 13-play drive that resulted in a Kweli Battle 6-yard touchdown catch from Streater to give Overlea a 27-21 halftime lead.

Eastern Tech’s offense took advantage of field position from their special teams.
In the second half, Eastern Tech went to the ground game using Running Backs O.J. Parker, Lawrence and Preisinger to combine for 88 yards rushing. Knight did not complete a pass in the second half and only had one attempt. The Mavericks took the lead for good 28-27 on a Parker 4-yard touchdown run.

Eastern Tech improves to 2-2 on the year and Overlea falls to 2-2 after starting the season at 2-0. Eastern Tech travels to Anne Arundel County to play Northeast and Overlea plays on the road again for the third straight week at Lansdowne.

Men’s Soccer

In the second minute of play, Essex’s Isaiah Price went on a breakaway and tapped the ball around Hagerstown’s goalie who took out Price just outside the box. The Hawks’ keeper was given a red card and the Knights awarded a penalty kick.
