Perry Hall Grad and CCBC Essex Woman Star Dietrich Named All-American

The National Junior College Athletic Association announced it 2019 Division I Women’s Soccer All-America teams, with CCBC Essex’s and Perry Hall High graduate Kara Dietrich earning second team honors. She is the first Knights’ women’s soccer student-athlete since 2002 to earn the honor.

As a freshman, Dietrich helped lead the Knights to a 19-4 overall record and the team’s first trip to the national tournament in 24 years. She finished the season with 52 goals scored, second most in the nation.

Dietrich had 12 multi-goal games this year, including a career-high six on two occasions (September 21 vs. Hagerstown, October 1 vs. CCBC Catonsville).

She scored six goals in the Region XX Division I Tournament, helping the Knights to its first region title since 2012 and notched both goals in a 2-0 defeat of Sussex County in the NJCAA Northeast District semifinals.

The Knights also won its first conference title this season in 17 years.

Dietrich was voted NJCAA Women’s Soccer Division I Player of the Week (September 22-30) and Maryland Juco Women’s Soccer Player of the Month (September) this year.

Perry Hall Grads Help CCBC Essex Women Beat Frederick

On Tuesday, it was a crisp autumn evening in Baltimore, but the Knights remained hot as they dispatched Frederick 3-1 to end the regular season on a 16-game winning streak and win their first Maryland Juco Athletic Conference Championship in more than seven seasons.

The win also gives the Knights the No. 1 seed and a first round bye in the NJCAA Region XX Division I Tournament, which begins for Essex in the semifinals round on October 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the tournament is being hosted by Harford Community College.

CCBC Essex (16-1, 7-0 Maryland Juco) began the game pressing hard, but the Frederick defense was up to the challenge, limiting the Knights to just one shot in the first 12 minutes of play.

In the 13th minute of play, however, freshman and Sparrows Point grad Dani Zacierka began a run before being pulled down in the box that would lead to a penalty kick. Fellow freshman and Perry Hall grad Kara Dietrich converted the kick for her NJCAA Division I leading 43rd goal of the season, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.

It was also the 100th goal scored this season for Essex.

The rest of the half would go on to be played primarily in the middle of the field with the Knights holding a 1-0 edge at the break.
Frederick (10-3-1, 4-2-1 Maryland Juco) would strike 10 minutes into the second half when Lindsey Brant scored her 43rd goal on the year to tie Dietrich for the national lead. It took the Knights 10 minutes to respond in kind.

Ryleigh Fachler, also a graduate of Perry Hall, would put in a head ball past the Cougars’ keeper off a ball from Dietrich to make it 2-1 in the 67th minute of play.

“It was really exciting,” Fachler said. “And the fact that we pulled it out was great.”
In the 78th minute, Fachler would net the dagger when she would put another head ball past in off a beautiful cross from Taylor West to make the score 3-1. Is was Fachler’s ninth of the year.

“I am usually one of the shortest players on the field,” said Fachler, who stands at 5-foot-1. “So I have a saying that I use, ‘Heart over height,’ to motivate me to win head balls. It was so exciting to score on two headers in game like this.”Emily Vetra, a Sparrows Point grad, did not tally a goal or an assist, but her play, especially at the midfield, was one of the biggest reason the Knights were able to control the ball so much.

Sam Tornatore of Eastern Tech, made her 17th consecutive start in goal and finished with three saves. She now has 37 saves this year with a 1.47 goals against average.

The more than 100 guests on hand Saturday at CCBC Essex for the CCBC Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony were treated to a festival of goals, as the Knights men and women soccer teams each blanked Hagerstown 13-0.

On the women’s side, the Knights (8-1, 5-0 Maryland Juco) got off to a hot start in the third minute when when Perry Hall High grad Kara Dietrich found the back of the net. She would finish the game with six goals and now has 23 on the season.

It wouldn’t take long for another Essex goal.

In the sixth minute, Ashlyn Hales, a grad of Eastern Tech, scored on a pass from Dietrich.

Dietrich would continue to let shots fly and in the 12th minute of play Emily Vetri of Sparrows Point played a ball into Dietrich for the finish and a 3-0 lead.

Taylor West picked up her second goal on the season two minutes later. West made a run down the sideline to a ball played by Mikayla Boyle, another grad from Eastern Tech.

Peyton Apruzzese scored her first collegiate goal in the 26th minute. The sophomore has played more than 700 minutes in goal and this season has seen time in the field.

It would be more of the same in the second half. Dietrich would score twice more within two minutes with assists coming from West and Boyle.

Sparrows Point grad Trinity Pfeifer would replace Eastern Tech grad Sam Tornatore between the pipes in the 55th minute.

The Hawks did not register a shot in the contest, so neither goalie registered a save.

Mia Brookshire, another Sparrows Point grad, would close out the scoring for Essex in the 81st minute with her first collegiate goal.

In the second minute of play, Essex’s Isaiah Price went on a breakaway and tapped the ball around Hagerstown’s goalie who took out Price just outside the box. The Hawks’ keeper was given a red card and the Knights awarded a penalty kick.

The Knights (7-2, 5-1 Maryland Juco) did not convert the penalty kick, but tallied its first goal in the seventh minute after a Hagerstown foul.

Freshman Marvin Martinez scored his first collegiate goal to give the Knights the early 1-0 lead.

In the 13th minute, another foul in the box by Hagerstown led to a Seth Onolaja converting a penalty kick to make it 2-0 Essex.

Daigo Adachi would score in the 17th minute on a ball from Price.

Price would then score a minute later for the 4-0 Essex lead.

In more double punch action, Rezon Ahmeti tapped in a goal from a pass by Sam Adunah in the 28th minute. A couple seconds later, Wilfred Tinay scored a one on one with a dissecting ball through the defense by Javier Avetrani.

Adunah would find the net with another assist coming from Avetrani at 42:34 for a 7-0 lead at halftime.

It took only 10 minutes into the second half for Avetrani to get himself a goal, assisted by Rin Yasui.

Adachi would score his second goal in the 57th minute with the assist coming from Martinez for a nine-goal lead.

Dundalk High grad Hamza Iguidre would score number 10 on the day with an assist for Andy Portillo.

Acolmi Rios, a Perry Hall grad would finish a shot in the 60th minute for an 11-0 Essex lead.

Sam Diaz scored the next goal with the assist going to Eastern Tech grad Mark Mudimba and Ahmeti capped the scoring with his second goal of the day in the 90th minute.

The Knights defeated Rowan College at Burlington County 5-0 yesterday at home to win their fourth consecutive game of the season. Freshman Kara Dietrich (Perry Hall) led the way with four goals scored.

Freshman Ashlyn Hales (Eastern Tech) netted the game’s first goal in the 15th minute of play to put the Knights on the board. It was Hales first collegiate tally.

“Honestly, when the ball came to me I wasn’t going to hit it,” Hales said. “Then I noticed the right side of the goal was open, I took the shot and it was like slow motion into the upper ninety.”

Less than one minute later, Dietrich scored her first of the contest to put Essex up 2-0 just 15:29 into the match.

The Knights (4-1, 2-0 Maryland Juco Conference) dominated the game early and often, holding the Barons without a shot on goal until the 60th minute of play.

Essex out shot Rowan 19-1 in the first half and 29-5 in the game.

Knights’ freshman goal keeper Sam Tornatore (Eastern Tech) faced just three shots on goal and saved them all.

Dietrich picked up her next two goals in the 21st and 36th minutes of play, respectively, to finish her hat trick in the first half.

Her final goal came in the 83rd minute. She now has eight goals this year, good enough for second most in NJCAA Region XX Division I.

“I had a couple of shots that I thought were nice that didn’t go in,” Dietrich said. “But I’ve been working on finishing and I had a lot of great assists. One came from Taylor [West] on the outside. She played it to the six and I was able to finish.”

A Long Way from Game 1

CCBC Essex’s women’s soccer team opened its season on August 24 with a 15-0 loss to defending NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer champion and preseason No. 1 Monroe. The team was missing several starters in that season-opening match.

Since then, the Knights have won four straight and have outscored its opponents 16-4 over that span.

The Knights have returned almost all of their starting pieces and have played more consistent, cohesive soccer since its first game of the year.

“In our first game, we were not really clicking,” Dietrich said. “Monroe really pushed us during that shutout, so we know we had to work harder. Since then, our back line has really stepped up, and our midfield has been connecting the ball well.”

On August 25, Essex defeated Harcum 4-3 at home in overtime. Freshman Ryleigh Fachler (Perry Hall) finished a cross from Mikayla Boyle (Eastern Tech) to win it for the Knights 7:43 into overtime.

Dietrich’s first goal of the season in the 22nd minute tied the game at one, which is where it stayed going into halftime.

The Bears scored first in the second half at 49:22, but their lead was short lived as Dani Zacierka (Sparrows Point) tied it at two less than three minutes later.

Zacierka scored again in the 60th minute to put the Knights ahead 3-2. But the Bears tied it in the 79th minute to force overtime.

Fachler’s golden goal came on a beautiful cross from Boyle at 97:43. After much confusion surrounding whether the ball crossed the line, the Knights celebrated its first win of the season.

On September 3, CCBC Essex hit the pitch at home to open Maryland Juco and Region XX play against Montgomery.

The Knights last met the Raptors in last year’s Region XX Division I Tournament semifinals where Montgomery upended Essex 5-1 to reach the finals.

CCBC Essex would not allow a repeat performance, taking the Raptors down 2-0.

Fachler and Dietrich provided the goals – in the 30th and 60th minutes, resptively – and Tornatore stopped both Montgomery shots on goal to perserve the shutout.

On September 6, Essex hit the road for the first time this season and defeated conference foe Anne Arundel 5-1 at Siegert Field.

Amaya Purnell (Perry Hall), Dietrich (2) and Boyle (2) provided the goals, as Josephine Eskey (Loch Raven) contributed an assist. Tornatore finished with one save on the only shot she face during her 56:17 of game action.
