Boundary Study Meeting for New Elementary School

The first meetings of the Northeast Area Elementary Boundary Study Committee, which has been charged with creating new attendance boundaries for the new northeast elementary school and a new, larger Red House Run Elementary School, has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Sept. 22.

The public is invited to attend the 6-8 p.m. meeting online by visiting the boundary study website. The meeting had been scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 16, but was rescheduled to accommodate the Yom Kippur holiday.

“Ensuring that the public understands how attendance zones are drawn has always been an important part of opening a new or expanded school,” said Baltimore County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Darryl L. Williams. “This year, also in response to the ongoing pandemic and the need to maintain the health, safety, and well-being of our students, staff, and families, we are using the virtual platform for those interested in this boundary line process.”

This month’s meeting will be the first of six for the committee, which was formed last spring to make room for the new 700-seat school currently under construction along Rossville Boulevard near Gum Spring and Ridge roads. The school is scheduled to open to students in August 2022.

In addition, Red House Run Elementary School is also being expanded, which will impact attendance lines in many of the same northeastern communities affected by the new elementary school. With the new Red House Run Elementary scheduled to open for students in August 2023, both schools will relieve overcrowding at other schools in the northeast.

For that reason, eight elementary schools have been identified as being part of the committee’s study: Elmwood, Fullerton, Joppa View, McCormick, Perry Hall, Red House Run, Shady Spring, and Vincent Farm elementary schools.

In addition to the six committee meetings, where members will consider boundary options to accommodate the new school construction as well as all other participating schools, the public also is invited to a virtual public information session scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 7-8 p.m. Members of the public may learn about the boundary process and participate through an online survey conducted to gather feedback from the community on draft boundary line options.

Following the meetings and public information session, a recommendation will be presented to the Board of Education for a decision in March 2022.

More information, including the dates and times of all committee meetings and information about how to join the meetings virtually, may be found at the boundary study website.

Five Area Football Teams Pick Up Road Wins

The theme this past weekend was road wins as seven of the area schools were on the road and five of those schools picked up road wins in football (Kenwood, Patapsco, Dundalk, Mount Carmel & Sparrows Point). New Cranes Arrive at Port of Baltimore

Governor Larry Hogan welcomed four new massive Neo-Panamax container cranes to the Port of Baltimore’s Seagirt Marine Terminal in Dundalk following a two-month journey that included passage under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The governor was joined by officials from the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA) and its public-private partner, Ports America Chesapeake.

“This is a great day for the Port of Baltimore and for the men and women who make up its outstanding workforce,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “The Port’s container business has grown impressively in recent years and is poised to grow even more with the addition of these new ultra-large cranes. Thanks to our MDOT MPA team and our partners at Ports America Chesapeake, the Port of Baltimore is well-positioned to continue as one of Maryland’s prime economic engines.”

The new cranes are fully electric, measure 450 feet tall, and weigh approximately 1,740 tons, making them 25 feet taller and 190 tons heavier than the Port’s first set of Neo-Panamax cranes that arrived in 2012. The new cranes can each extend to reach 23 containers across on a ship and lift 187,500 pounds of cargo.

Ports America Chesapeake will test and prepare the cranes over the next few months, and they are expected to be fully operational in early 2022.
Complementing the new Seagirt berth is the expansion of Baltimore’s Howard Street Tunnel, which will allow for double-stacked container rail cars to travel to and from the Port, clearing a longtime hurdle and giving the East Coast seamless double-stack capacity from Maine to Florida.

The Howard Street Tunnel project, which received final federal environment approval in June, benefits from public-private investment from the State of Maryland, the federal government, and CSX. It is expected to increase the Port’s business by about 160,000 containers annually, and generate approximately 6,550 construction jobs and an additional 7,300 jobs from the increased business.

The Port of Baltimore generates approximately 15,300 direct jobs, with nearly 140,000 jobs overall linked to Port activities. It ranks first among the nation’s ports for volume of autos and light trucks, roll on/roll off heavy farm and construction machinery, and imported gypsum, 11th among major U.S. ports for foreign cargo handled, and 10th for total foreign cargo value.
