Patapsco High School 2021 Football Preview

Patapsco 2019 Record: 3-6

Head Coach Tyler Clough

“The Patapsco Patriots team for the 2021 season is the best team that I have had in my 6 years as head coach at Patapsco. For the first time every player that is on my offensive line is the actual size of a lineman. We also field a team with multiple versatile players, guys that can play anywhere on the field. The best part about my team this year is that they all just want to play football.

“After not playing in 2020 and just a mini season in the spring of 2021 my entire roster is ready to play and they don’t care what position that is. Every guy on my team is willing to play any position and do what’s best for the team. We have huge goals this fall, first we want to go over .500 and have a winning record. Every year I’ve been the coach we’ve won at least one more game than the year before, it’s time to take the next step and have a winning record. Our next goal is to make the playoffs.

“If we go over .500 and win 5-6 games, it should put us in a spot where we have the chance to make the 3A north playoffs for only the second time in school history. Overall, we have a competitive varsity team and are excited for the season.”

Key Players

Elijah Bass, RB/Safety Junior
Elijah is a starting running back and safety, he will lead our team and we will look for him to be a full time running back and carry the load for us on offense.

Willie Beard, OL/DL Senior
Willie is a starting left tackle and D-tackle, he is an all-division player and the anchor for our offensive line.

Kevin Batchelor, OL/DE Junior
Kevin is a two-way starter and an extremely athletic offensive and defensive lineman. Kevin has a high motor and always plays hard.

Gavin Tezzano WR/LB Senior
Gavin had a strong season for us in the covid league and we look for him to carry his momentum into the fall. A two way starter we will look for Gavin to lead us at middle line backer.

Eric Olsen FB/LB Junior
Eric was a two way starter during the spring league and will be a leader on offense and defense this season.

Khalil Coates QB Freshman
Khalil is our starting QB as a freshman, what he lacks in experience he makes up for in size as he stands 6’2 220lbs. We will look to develop Khalil over the next few seasons.

Middle River Man Arrested at I-95 Traffic Stop

Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police have arrested a 28-year-old Middle River man on weapons and drug distribution charges stemming from an Aug. 20 traffic stop in White Marsh. MDTA Police Officers took the man into custody Thursday, September 2, with assistance from the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, and were assisted by the Baltimore County Police Department during the initial investigation.

Shortly after midnight Aug. 20, an MDTA Police Officer assigned to the Central Command Detachment conducted a traffic stop on a dark blue Nissan Maxima for drifting across lane lines on northbound I-95 near Exit 67. As the officer approached the stopped vehicle, the vehicle fled the scene.

MDTA Police Officers responded to the address of the fleeing vehicle’s registered owner. While at the address, officers located the vehicle and observed a male subject exit the vehicle and place a backpack in a trash receptacle. When officers approached the man, he fled on foot. Officers seized the backpack and discovered a loaded handgun and baggies of suspected crack cocaine and marijuana inside. During their investigation, officers learned the handgun had been reported stolen by the Hampshire County (W.Va.) Sheriff’s Office.

Officers obtained a search warrant for the residence of the fleeing vehicle’s registered owner. During the investigation and the execution of the search warrant, officers seized additional firearms, drugs and ammunition.

As a result of their investigation, MDTA Police Officers obtained an arrest warrant for Deshawn Murdock, 28, of Middle River. After his arrest Thursday, Murdock was transported to the Baltimore County Detention Center. He faces 14 criminal charges including controlled dangerous substance (drug) possession with intent to distribute and possession of a stolen firearm.

Kenwood High School 2021 Football Preview

Kenwood 2019 Record: 4-6 (3A playoffs first round)

Head Coach Derrick Krumholtz

“We are very talented at the skill positions and we return the entire starting Offensive Line from the Spring Mini-Season. We lost 4 key Seniors from the Spring team, but we did add two talented players that were not eligible in the spring. We are excited to see what this group can do against a very tough schedule of competition,” Krumholtz said about the season.

“We are a 3A team playing a predominantly 2A schedule so we will have less opportunities for playoff points compared to the other 3A teams in the county. It’s unfair and unfortunate, but all we can do is try to win the games we have on our schedule and see where we end up.”

Parkville Teacher Nominated for Best US History Teacher

Adam Laye, social studies department chair at Parkville High School, has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the 2021 National History Teacher of the Year. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History selected the finalists from among the National History Teacher of the Year winners from all 50 states, U.S. Department of Defense schools, Washington D.C., and U.S. territories.

The national winner will be announced later this month. An in-person ceremony for the winner will be held in late fall 2021, health and safety protocols permitting. Support for the National History Teacher of the Year Award ceremony is provided by HISTORY®.

“We are so proud of Adam Laye for his exemplary teaching and leadership and for receiving this extraordinary honor,” said Baltimore County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Darryl L. Williams.

Laye has been teaching American history and American government for the past 15 years. He taught at Randallstown High before Parkville High. It was in college, at Frostburg State College, that Laye decided to apply his interest in social sciences to a career in education. Laye, who holds both a bachelor’s degree in social sciences and a master’s degree in teaching from Frostburg, is recognized for his inquiry-based approach to teaching history.

“I enjoy the challenge of making history relevant to my students’ lives,” Laye said, “by giving them the tools to derive meaning from it.”
Inaugurated in 2004, the History Teacher of the Year Award highlights the crucial importance of history education by honoring exceptional American history teachers from elementary school through high school. The award honors one K-12 teacher from each state, the District of Columbia, U.S. Department of Defense schools and U.S. Territories. In fall 2021, the National History Teacher of the Year will be selected from the pool of state winners.

Nominations for the 2022 History Teacher of the Year awards are now open. Students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors may nominate K-12 teachers for the award. The deadline for 2022 nominations is March 31, 2022.

Sports Editor No Longer With Dundalk Eagle

For the first time since 2000, a local legend will no longer be on the sidelines at the three Dundalk area high schools for a sporting event.

No, this is not a coach, booster or parent. It is a member of the local media. Sports editor Bill Gates is no longer with the Dundalk Eagle after 21 years.

He has had health issues and was unable to return to work before his medical leave expired. He now lives in Florida with family because it’s not safe for him to live alone due to his health problems.

As many of you know, I was a colleague of Bill when I worked at the Dundalk Eagle. I knew Bill was one of the top sports reporters in the state as I saw all the awards that he accumulated over the years before my arrival.

The one thing that I didn’t know about Bill was his dedication. He covered as many of the Dundalk, Sparrows Point and Patapsco high school sporting events as possible. If any of the two local schools were playing each other in any sport, Bill was going to cover those teams.

It didn’t matter if it was a glamour sport such as football, baseball, softball or soccer or if it was tennis, field hockey, wrestling, cross country or track and field (I can’t remember if he covered Badminton, but I am sure he did).

And that meant there were a lot of bad teams and games that he had to cover but he would be at a lacrosse game when a 1-8 Dundalk would play a 2-6 Patapsco. He never wanted to miss a Dundalk, Patapsco or Sparrows Point game.

I remember on Memorial Day weekend in either 2013 or 2014, Bill has a busy schedule. He had a track and field meet on Friday where many local students had a chance at first place finishes at Morgan State.

The next day, Sparrows Point was playing for the state titles in baseball and softball. One game was in Aberdeen and the other game was at College Park.

Of course Bill traveled to both locations which was a feat in itself, but he was upset that he couldn’t go back to the track and field event at Morgan that day.

I asked him why does he care about one event since he was there on Friday. He responded there was one student that had a chance to finish first in pole vaulting and he would feel terrible if she wins first place but did not receive any media coverage.

That’s what makes Bill such a great reporter. He loves giving the athletes recognition for their hard work.

He spoiled the Dundalk, Patapsco and Sparrows Point schools as many schools in this state only receive coverage if they win a state title.

I am sure Bill was bored during the pandemic from March 2020 until the start of the proposed sports season, which was scheduled to begin in 2021.

He was looking forward to the fall season finally starting March, but he never made it back to cover a game last year.

This weekend the football season kicks off in Baltimore County, but the sidelines in Dundalk will not be the same.
