Parkville & Overlea Boys Basketball Teams in Final Fours

Eastern Baltimore County has been well represented in the state high school boys basketball playoffs. Three area teams made it to the their State Quarterfinals in three of the four classifications.

Parkville and Overlea basketball teams have advanced to the semifinals of their respective classifications. Kenwood fell in their quarterfinal game.

Parkville improved to 23-0 after an 84-40 win over Duval in the 4A Boys Basketball State Quarterfinals. The Knights returned to their second straight 4A State Semifinals. Parkville did not get an opportunity to play for the state title in 2020 as the semifinals were canceled during the COVID-19 outbreak. The full 2021 basketball playoffs were canceled.

Overlea advanced to their first state semifinals since 1992 with a 70-66 over Williamsport High School from Washington County in the 2A Boys Basketball State Quarterfinals. Overlea is now 19-4 on the year.

The Falcons defeated 77-22 Sparrows Point in the 2A Regional Semifinals and defeated Carver of Baltimore City 55-36.

The season came to an end for Kenwood as the Bluebirds lost to Atholton 62-55. The Bluebirds finished the season with a 18-5 record.

They defeated Edgewood 52-51 in 3A Regional Semifinals and defeated CM Wright by 1 point 55-54 in the Regional Finals.

The Essex Cube Has Been Removed and Retired

There were reports and photos on social media that the Essex Cube was removed on Friday, March 4.

The Heritage Society of Essex and Middle River, Inc, which announced last year that the Cube would be replaced by a new landmark, confirmed the removal on Friday. The cube is now at the museum. A statement was released by the museum on Friday.

“As many of you may have noticed, the Essex Cube has been relocated from its location on Eastern Blvd. to make way for the new Essex Landmark Sculpture, which will be installed later this Spring. Rest assured, the Cube is safe in storage until it can be reinstalled at the Heritage Society of Essex and Middle River (Essex Museum). The Heritage Society is working closely with the Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce and its Eastern Baltimore County Task Force to ensure that the Cube will be preserved for ourselves and future generations. More details will follow, and we will be asking for the community’s support with this project,” said the statement.

“We are looking forward to the beautiful new Essex Landmark sculpture which represents the beauty and hardworking people in our community. Progress is a great thing, and these are exciting times for Essex.”

The removal of the Essex Cube has brought some controversy as some folks were wearing “Save the Cube” shirts at last year’s Essex Day.

Fullerton Fireworks to Return in 2022


The Fullerton Fireworks Foundation announced that its firework show will return for the first time since 2019 on Sunday, July 3. The 2020 and 2021 events were canceled because of COVID-19.

The field at Fullerton Elementary School will open at 3 p.m. with vendors selling food. Hotdogs, hamburgers, funnel cakes, crab cakes and pit beef are among the food items that will be sold by vendors.

The band “Awaken” will starting playing at 5 p.m. The fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:15 p.m.

The Fullerton Fireworks Foundation is still looking for sponsors. Sponsorship packages start at $50 and corporate sponsor packages are available for $6,000.

Man Fatally Shot in Dundalk on Ewald Avenue


Baltimore County police officers responded to the 1900 block of Ewald Avenue in Dundalk for reports of a shooting on Wednesday, March 2 around 2:30 p.m.

When officers arrived they located a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Medics transported the victim, 43-year-old Tayvon Scott, to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Baltimore County homicide detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this shooting. Anyone with information regarding the case is being asked to call 410-307-2020.

One Person Arrested at Chesapeake HS


Baltimore County Police reported officers responded to Chesapeake High School in the 1800 block of Turkey Point Road in Essex in reference to an assault and disturbance.

The incident was reported Wednesday afternoon.

At least, one person has been arrested.

Ukrainian Cemetery Desecrated in Dundalk

Baltimore County Police received information that more than 50 headstones were damaged at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Cemetery in Dundalk.

The incident was called into police on Wednesday, Feb. 23 around 4 p.m.

Detectives continue to investigate this case.

Community to Hold Ukraine Candlelight Vigil


The Perry Hall Family Worship Center and the Office of Councilman David Marks are sponsoring a candlelight vigil in honor of the victims and families of Ukraine. This event is open to all.

The event will be held at Honeygo Park, 9033 Honeygo Blvd. in Perrt Hall on Friday, March 4 from 6 to 7 p.m.

“Please join the Perry Hall Family Worship Center and our office – and the larger community – at this candlelight village on Friday at 6 p.m. at Honeygo Park,” Councilman Marks said about the event. “Everyone is welcome.”

Menzer to Leave Dundalk Renaissance Corp.

The Dundalk Renaissance Corp. announced that its Executive Director Amy Menzer is stepping down to take a position with Baltimore County Government.

Menzer has served as the DRC Executive Director for the past 15 years.

Dundalk Renaissance President Dan Dawes thanked Menzer for her service to Dundalk and her commitment to the DRC.

“Amy’s vision and leadership over the past 15 years has been a key driver to propel Dundalk Renaissance to become the organization it is today. And while she will be greatly missed by the staff, board, partners and our Dundalk neighbors, her tireless and thorough work over the years leaves us on very solid footing,” Dawes said.

“Personally, having worked alongside Amy as a board member for 5 years, I’ll miss her passion for helping our community, but I think it’s great that she’s taking this opportunity to share her talents on an even larger stage to help more neighborhoods in Baltimore County.”

Menzer announced on social media that she is taking a new position with the Baltimore County Department of Planning working with Director Steve Lafferty.

“It has been an incredible honor to do community development work in Dundalk,” Menzer said in a statement about her time at the DRC.

“I have learned so much and been challenged beyond belief and been privileged to work with great people and make concrete positive things happen.”

Dundalk Resident Wins $500K in VaxCash 2.0 Promotion


The first of 12 prizes in the VaxCash 2.0 Promotion has been awarded to a 71-year-old Dundalk resident who visited Lottery Headquarters in Baltimore on Feb. 23 to claim the prize.

The winner, who chose to remain anonymous and use the nickname “Mi Familia,” received a call from the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) on Feb. 15 informing her of the win. She was in disbelief until she walked into the Lottery Winner’s Circle, where she enthusiastically danced around the room with Lottery staff.

“I didn’t believe it was real, until today,” the excited winner told Lottery officials. When asked why she chose to get the COVID-19 vaccine and booster, she said that she wanted protection from the virus.

“My mom convinced many of our family members to get the vaccine, too,” the winner’s daughter said. “She believes it is so important.”

The VaxCash 2.0 Promotion, which was announced by Governor Larry Hogan on Feb. 8, will award $2 million in cash prizes in weekly drawings from Feb. 15 to May 3. VaxCash 2.0 aims to incentivize Marylanders to get the COVID-19 booster. All Maryland residents 18 and older who have received an initial shot(s) and a booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine at eligible facilities in Maryland at any time are eligible to win. No registration or entry is needed.

In addition to the $500,000 prize awarded to the Dundalk winner, 10 weekly drawings from Feb. 23 through April 26 will award $50,000 prizes. And the promotion will end on May 3 with a drawing to award a grand prize of $1 million.

The mother-of-three plans to use her winnings to buy her dream house.

“My mother is superwoman,” the winner’s daughter said. “She spent her life raising my siblings and me. This is her much-deserved compensation.”

Body Found in Philadelphia Road Landfill


Baltimore County police officers responded to a landfill in the 10000 block of Philadelphia Road in White Marsh.

This was in reference to a body that was found at the scene on Friday, Feb. 25 around 1:30 p.m.

The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where an autopsy can be conducted.

This suspicious death investigation remains ongoing at this time.
